It will play a big role in making India’s coastal security better and stronger. The Indian Ministry of Defence said the commissioning of INS Arnala marks a major turning point for India’s naval strength. They said it will help India become more self-reliant and powerful in the Indian Ocean region.
INS Arnala features
INS Arnala is the first ship in a series of 16 shallow water anti-submarine vessels that are being made for the Indian Navy. It was made under the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ plan, which means it was built using Indian skills, tools and resources. Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) designed the ship with help from L&T Shipbuilders.
More than 80 % of the materials and systems used to make the ship came from Indian companies. Some of the top defence companies like BEL, L&T, Mahindra Defence, and MEIL provided important systems and parts.

The ship is 77.6 meters long and weighs more than 1,490 tonnes. It is also very special because it is the biggest Indian Navy warship that uses a mix of diesel engines and waterjets for movement. This helps it move smoothly and quickly through the water. INS Arnala is made to do different jobs, like looking for enemy submarines under the sea, helping in search and rescue missions, and taking part in small-scale navy operations in coastal areas.
The ship’s badge shows a special kind of sea shell called an auger shell, placed on a blue background. The name of the ship is written below in Devanagari script. The Indian Navy said this shell stands for strength, alertness, and power to survive. They said it also means that INS Arnala is ready to face the rough sea and carry out its missions perfectly, especially when fighting submarines.
The ship also has a special motto in Sanskrit, which is “अर्णवे शौर्यम्” (Arnave Shauryam). This means “Valour in the Ocean.” The Navy said these words show the courage, strength, and control the ship will have in the wide and deep seas.
