Reliance And Diehl Partnership: Reliance Defence has joined hands with German defence company Diehl Defence to make high-tech artillery ammunition in India. This partnership is focused on making the Vulcano 155mm long-range precision-guided shells. These special shells can hit targets more than 70 kilometers away with very high accuracy.
The accuracy comes from using both laser guidance and GPS technology. These advanced shells will be made mainly for the Indian Army, which will greatly help in upgrading the country’s artillery power.

This deal isn’t new. It follows an earlier agreement made between the two companies in 2019. But now, it has moved into a serious stage. The goal is to build and produce most of the Vulcano system inside India, which matches the Indian government’s “Make in India” and “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” plans. It’s also expected that more than 50% of the shell production will be done by Indian companies, showing how serious they are about becoming self-reliant in defence.
Reliance Group will take the lead as the main company in charge of making and supplying these Vulcano shells to the Indian military. Meanwhile, Diehl Defence will provide the key technologies, especially the guidance systems that help the shells reach their target with high accuracy. This kind of weapon is useful in modern battles where accuracy is more important than just firing a lot of shells.
New Defence Factory in Ratnagiri
Reliance Defence is also building a new big factory in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra to support this work. This area is called the Watad Industrial Area, and the factory will be a part of what’s being called the Dhirubhai Ambani Defence City. This new place will be set up from scratch, also known as a greenfield facility, and it will be used to make not just the Vulcano shells but also other types of ammunition and materials.

Once everything is ready, the new facility in Ratnagiri will be able to make 200,000 artillery shells every year. Along with that, it will also produce 10,000 tonnes of explosives and 2,000 tonnes of propellant charges. This means that India will be able to make a large part of its ammunition needs right here at home, without having to buy so much from other countries.
This project is also expected to create a lot of jobs and help boost India’s defence exports. According to India Today, Reliance Defence believes this business can be worth around Rs 10,000 crore. The government is aiming to reach Rs 50,000 crore in defence exports by the year 2029, and this project will help move closer to that target.
