What Is Israel’s Iron Dome? Is It Better Than India’s S-400?

Israel’s Iron Dome stops short range rockets using fast Tamir missiles, while India’s S-400 can shoot down long-range threats like fighter jets and ballistic missiles. Both serve different role in defence.

Israel’s Iron Dome: Recently, the world saw two big events that showed how different air defence systems work in real situations. Iran launched a big attack on Israel during the night between Friday and Saturday. They fired lots of missiles and drones as a response to earlier Israeli airstrikes that killed senior Iranian military officers and nuclear experts. Some of Iran’s missiles and drones reached deep into Israel, even Tel Aviv, and caused heavy damage. But Israel’s air defence systems, especially the Iron Dome, managed to stop many of them before they hit their targets.

At the same time, India faced attacks from Pakistan just last month, where Pakistan also used missiles and drones to strike multiple Indian cities. But not even one missile or drone reached its target. India used its advanced Russian-made S-400 Triumf system, and it stopped every single attack completely. This has made many people ask: does this show that the S-400 is better than Israel’s Iron Dome?

Israel’s Iron Dome and Its Defence Shield

The Iron Dome is Israel’s most famous air defence system. It became known around the world because it has protected Israel so many times from rocket attacks, especially from Gaza. The system is mainly for stopping short-range rockets and artillery shells. It uses a special radar called the ELM-2084 and shoots Tamir missiles to destroy rockets mid-air. This works very well when groups like Hamas fire rockets from nearby places like Gaza. The Iron Dome is very fast and can respond in seconds to destroy incoming rockets before they fall on people or buildings.

But the Iron Dome doesn’t work alone. When bigger and faster missiles come from far away places like Iran or Yemen, Israel uses other systems. The David’s Sling is one of them, which many call the most advanced missile system in the world. It can fire missiles called Stunner that fly at very high speeds, up to Mach 7.5. David’s Sling can even figure out if a warhead is real or just a decoy, which helps it hit only real threats. Israel also has the Arrow 2 and Arrow 3 systems, which can stop long-range ballistic missiles reported India.com. So Israel uses different layers of defence for different types of attacks.

S-400 Triumf System

India’s air defence system works differently. The S-400 Triumf, which India bought from Russia in 2018 for ₹40,000 crore, is one of the strongest parts of India’s defence. It can shoot down threats that come from up to 400 kilometers away and even those flying as high as 30 kilometers in the sky. This means it can stop many different kinds of attacks — not just rockets, but also drones, fighter jets, cruise missiles, and even hypersonic weapons.

The S-400 is highly mobile. The military can move it anywhere quickly and get it ready to fire in just a few minutes. It uses a radar system called the 92N6E, which is very advanced. This radar can detect enemies from as far as 600 kilometers and can track 160 different targets at the same time. To make sure a target is fully destroyed, the S-400 can fire two missiles at it. India’s S-400 is connected to a bigger system called IACCS, which helps the Air Force keep watch over a wide area and respond quickly to any attack.

India already received three of the five S-400 units and they are now working and active. Last month, during the India-Pakistan tension, these systems protected every city. All of Pakistan’s missiles and drones were shot down. None reached their targets. This strong performance has made the S-400 stand out in recent times.

Two Different Systems

Even though both systems are designed to defend against attacks, they are built for different things. The Iron Dome is best when enemies are close and shoot many small rockets at once. It’s excellent for protecting cities from fast, short-range attacks. Israel’s other systems like David’s Sling and Arrow 3 handle the bigger and faster missiles that come from far away.

On the other hand, the S-400 is made for long-range protection. It can stop powerful enemy missiles and planes from hundreds of kilometers away. It gives India the power to strike down many types of threats before they even get close. India’s air defence setup is more about stopping large, complex, and far-away attacks, while Israel’s system is more focused on stopping frequent rocket fire from nearby regions.
