India-Greece Relations
The two countries have grown closer over the last ten years. In 2023, they made their partnership a Strategic Partnership because they wanted to work more on trade, security, migration, and new technology.
They already have deals in areas like space work, joint defence efforts, and maritime projects. Greece is important to India because it sits in a strong spot in the Mediterranean and connects India to Europe through its big shipping and port industry.
What Happened During the Dialogue?
The meeting in Athens took place with top officials from both nations. Greece’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Alexandra Papadopoulou, opened the event and talked about how much the partnership matters for peace and safety in the region. The Indian delegation came under the leadership of Muanpuii Saiawi, who serves as Joint Secretary for Disarmament and International Security Affairs in India’s Ministry of External Affairs.

The two sides talked about many important areas. One major topic was Maritime Domain Awareness. They discussed ways to share quick and reliable information about sea movement in both the Mediterranean and the Indo-Pacific so they can stop dangerous activities early. They also studied new plans for naval teamwork. This included ideas for joint naval drills, port visits, and training programs to strengthen their skills against threats like piracy and illegal trafficking.
They also talked about working together when natural disasters hit sea areas. Both sides want to respond faster by sharing tools and preparing plans early. Another key topic was the blue economy. They discussed safe ways to use ocean resources like fish, offshore energy and marine research.
Importance of India-Greece Relations
The talks came at an important time because both the Mediterranean and Indo-Pacific are busy areas for world trade and politics. Many ships move through these regions, so calm and safe seas help the global economy. India’s Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative and Greece’s role in Mediterranean security fit well together, which makes this dialogue useful for both sides.
India and Greece also trained together earlier in 2025 when the Indian Navy and the Hellenic Navy carried out their first joint exercise in the Mediterranean.
