Indian Army Project Udbhav: According to Army Chief General Manoj Pande, the Army has studied the great battles of the Mahabharata, the valiant deeds of notable military leaders, and India’s rich statecraft legacy as part of Project Udbhav to broaden perspectives in the defense sector.

At a conference titled “Historical Patterns in Indian Strategic Culture,” he stated, “The project Udbhav launched last year, delved deep into ancient texts such as Vedas, Puranas, Upanishads, and Arthashastra, and it has revealed substantial intellectual convergences between eminent Indian and Western scholars.”

According to General Pande, the wisdom of the ancient Indians has its roots in a 5,000-year-old society that places a high value on information. As per Hindustan times, he went on to say that the world’s greatest collection of manuscripts, a massive store of intellectual literature, and the development of numerous schools of thinkers across domains are examples of the heritage.

With an emphasis on preparing the force for the future, the Udbhav project seeks to advance indigenous discourse by incorporating India’s longstanding strategic acumen into the modern military sphere.

“The project has delved deep into ancient texts such as Vedas, Puranas, Upanishads, and Arthashastra, which are rooted in inter-connectedness, righteousness, and ethical values,” General Pande said. “…it has explored the epic battles of the Mahabharata and the strategic brilliance during the reigns of Mauryas, Guptas, and Marathas, which has shaped India’s rich military heritage.”

He mentioned the project. The objective of Udbhav was to bring pertinent lessons into the modern military while also rediscovering the rich Indian history of strategic ideas and statecraft, which was drawn from ancient writings on diplomacy, warcraft, statecraft, and grand strategy.

According to General Pande, the initiative has uncovered “substantial intellectual convergences” between Western and Indian thinkers, demonstrating the philosophical affinity between them. Through studies on India’s tribal customs, the Maratha naval legacy, and the individual valorous acts of military characters, particularly women, he claimed it has stimulated the military’s inquiry into new areas.

He declared that the Army will continue to work on initiatives like Udbhav. The extensive experiences, sacrifices, and victories of India’s battle-tested armed forces, according to General Pande, will continue to shape the nation’s strategic culture.

He expressed his confidence that the Udbhav compendium, which draws lessons from the country’s military history, will help the armed services be forward-thinking and prepared for the future.

According to Pande, it is encouraging to see that the military services’ history and legacy are valued as essential components of the country’s culture and identity.

Project Udhbav was started by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh last year to encourage indigenous dialogue inside the Army. The project was started in partnership with United Service Institution, the oldest think tank in India that was established in 1870. Its goal is to give officers the skills they need to adapt traditional knowledge to contemporary situations and improve their comprehension of international relations. This occurred in the context of the emphasis on indigenous military customs.
