U.S Military in Europe: According to military officials on Monday, “a combination of factors” that could influence the safety of soldiers and their families have resulted in the placement of U.S. military bases in Europe on greater security alert.

Overseeing 83,000 American soldiers at Army, Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps locations around the continent is the U.S. European Command. A statement issued on Monday stated that the command “is redoubling its efforts to stress vigilance during the summer months.”

According to USAToday, the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, as well as the Paris Olympics, are some of the elements influencing European security.

“It was due to a combination of factors potentially impacting the safety and security of service members stationed in the European theater,” Sabrina Singh, Pentagon spokeswoman, told reporters Monday. “I’m not going to get into more specifics on the intelligence itself, but it’s not a single threat—it’s a combination of different factors.”

One of the main justifications for increasing security was being worried about safety during the Olympics, a senior defense officer who was not permitted to talk in public said. Rather than being a reaction to a particular threat, the action seems to be proactive.

To guarantee the safety of each individual, their family, and their loved ones, European Command “constantly monitors the security environment to ensure its personnel are informed and best armed,” the statement reads.
