Russia-India relations: Moscow’s envoy here described India as a “longtime friend of Russia,” noting that his nation has a special privilege strategic relationship with New Delhi and that he anticipates further improvement in bilateral relations following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s anticipated visit to Russia.

Vassily Nebenzia, Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, made the comments in response to a query about Prime Minister Modi’s anticipated trip to Moscow at a news conference held here on Monday in honour of Russia taking over the Security Council Presidency for July.

“We have a strategic cooperation and particular privileges with India. Russia has traditionally had a friendship with India. Nebenzia stated, “I think that will be a substantive conversation on the whole range of issues that our countries cooperate on.” We interact in so many different sectors.

He continued, saying, “I’m sure that there will be serious messages coming out of that visit, and, I presume, in the form of joint documents as well.” He did not know what kind of documents would be the outcome of that visit, though.

According to Business Standard, Nebenzia stated, “I expect Russian-Indian relations to blossom even better,” in response to a question about what he hopes to accomplish during the visit.

India and Russia are considering the prospect of Prime Minister Modi making a quick trip to Moscow the following week to have extensive discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin. If the visit happens, it will be Modi’s first visit to Russia in almost five years. He last travelled to Russia in 2019 to attend an economic summit in Vladivostok, a city in the Far East.

A Kremlin official stated last week that active preparations are in place for Modi’s potential visit, even though the Indian side has not confirmed the plan.

“I can confirm that we are preparing a visit by the prime minister of India. We cannot (say) the dates as yet, because the dates are announced by the parties in agreement,” Yuri Ushakov, an assistant to the Russian president, said.

“But we are actively preparing. I will emphasise once again, this visit will take place,” he told reporters in response to a query.

The Indian prime minister’s one-day visit is scheduled for July 8, according to diplomatic sources; however, the exact date is still up in the air and many possibilities are being considered.

After a three-year break, Modi and President Putin are scheduled to convene the India-Russia annual meeting if he visits Russia.

The highest institutional engagement mechanism in the strategic alliance between India and Russia is the yearly summit between the two nations’ presidents.

21 yearly conferences have so far been held alternately in Russia and India.

The most recent summit took place in New Delhi on December 6, 2021. To attend the meeting, President Putin travelled to India.

Along with signing 28 Memoranda of Understanding and agreements, the two sides also released a joint statement titled “India-Russia Partnership for Peace, Progress and Prosperity” at the summit.
