India Apache Helicopters: India is set to welcome its first batch of Apache attack helicopters for the Army on July 21. These powerful helicopters are coming from the United States after a long wait and will soon be deployed near the Pakistan border. Defence and security sources say they will first land at the Hindon Air Force Station, which belongs to the Indian Air Force. These helicopters are known to be super strong and are often called “tanks in the air” because of how deadly and advanced they are.

This delivery is very important for the Army because it will help them become more powerful during any future fights or missions. These helicopters are also great for finding out what the enemy is doing, even at night or in bad weather. They have special systems that help soldiers see targets clearly and act fast.

Along with being deadly in attack, the Apaches can also be used for security duties and even peacekeeping missions when needed. They come packed with the latest tools for communication, sensors, weapons, and navigation, making them useful for many situations.

Delay in Delivery

Even though the Indian Army formed its first Apache squadron in Jodhpur over 15 months ago, the helicopters didn’t arrive on time. Problems in the global supply system and sudden changes in world politics caused the delay. But now, after a long wait, the first group of Army’s Apache helicopters is finally ready to arrive.

The Indian Air Force already has two working Apache squadrons one in Pathankot and the other in Jorhat. These came from an earlier deal between India and the US signed in 2015. Under that agreement, the US sent 22 Apache helicopters to the IAF, and the final delivery was completed in July 2020. Later that year, when former US President Donald Trump visited India, another deal was signed this time for six more Apache helicopters, meant for the Indian Army. That deal cost around $600 million. The plan was to send the first batch by May or June 2024, but it got delayed until now, reported NDTV.

In 2023 the Army did get one Apache helicopter. It was made in Hyderabad at the Tata Boeing Aerospace Limited factory, a partnership between Tata Advanced Systems and Boeing. That helicopter showed India’s efforts to make more defence equipment in the country itself. But the rest of the helicopters are coming from the US as part of the signed deal.

The Apache AH-64E helicopters are not like normal helicopters. They are built for war and can do many things at once. They carry strong weapons, fly easily at night with their special night vision tools, and give soldiers a clear look at targets even when the weather is bad. That means the Army can depend on them for quick attacks, keeping an eye on enemy movements, and for important missions near the border.
