SAIL DRDO Defence Steel: Steel Authority of India Limited has gotten an important technology transfer deal from the Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory, known as DMRL, which works under DRDO. This deal gives SAIL the right to make special steel grades that are needed for defence work. These steels are made for hard and serious use in naval warships and submarines.
The agreement is called the Licensing Agreement for Transfer of Technology, or LAToT. Under this deal, SAIL can make DMR-249A, DMR-249B and DMR-249BK grade steel. Reports also say DMR-249B steel plates in the 8-30 mm thickness range have been transferred for use at SAIL’s Rourkela Steel Plant and Alloy Steel Plant in Durgapur, while DMR-249A and DMR-249BK steel billets have been transferred to ASP, Durgapur for naval ship and submarine work.

How this will Help India’s Defence Sector?
This step is meant to make India stronger in defence making. Instead of depending too much on imported material, the country can now make more of this high-grade steel on its own. That is a big help for future naval projects because ships and submarines need steel that is strong, safe and reliable.
SAIL has said that this move supports the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) goal. The idea is simple. India should build more of its own defence materials inside the country. This helps the nation grow a stronger industrial base and also makes the supply chain more secure for important defence needs.

The partnership between SAIL and DMRL is also important because it brings together steel making and defence research. DMRL develops the technology and SAIL turns it into actual steel products that can be used in real naval platforms. That makes the link between research and production much stronger.
According to recent reports, the LAToT documents were handed over in Hyderabad on July 21, 2026, and later formally received at SAIL’s Rourkela plant on July 29, 2026. This shows how the transfer moved from paper to plant-level use very quickly.
