India and Germany Submarine Deal: India and Germany are now very close to signing the long-awaited Project-75I submarine deal. German Ambassador to India Philipp Ackermann said the agreement could come very soon, and even hinted it may happen in the next month. The plan is one of India’s biggest naval defence projects and has been under discussion for a long time.
The deal is expected to be worth about 8 billion euros, which is more than Rs 90,000 crore, and it will bring six new conventional submarines for the Indian Navy. Reuters also reported earlier in 2026 that Germany expected the deal to be signed “soon,” showing that the talks had already reached an advanced stage.

The submarines are planned under the government’s “Make in India” push. The goal is not only to buy new warships. It is also to build them inside India with foreign help and transfer of technology. The work is expected to be done by German company ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, or TKMS, together with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd, better known as MDL. If the deal is signed, the submarines will be made in India, not imported as finished boats. That makes this project important for both naval power and local defence manufacturing.

Project-75I is one of the most important modernisation plans for the Indian Navy. It is meant to add six next-generation conventional submarines with better stealth, longer staying power under water, and stronger combat systems. These new boats are expected to help India watch the seas more closely and stay ready for long-range underwater missions. The older submarine fleet is getting outdated, so this project is seen as a big need, not just a nice extra.

The new submarines are also expected to come with modern air-independent propulsion, or AIP. In simple words, AIP helps a submarine stay under water for much longer without surfacing. That makes it harder to find and easier to use in war. The German Type-214NG design has been widely discussed because of its stealth and proven fuel-cell AIP system, which is one reason it has stayed in the race for Project-75I.
