Super Sukhoi Upgrade: India is moving ahead with a major upgrade plan for its Su-30MKI fighter fleet. The idea is to make the aircraft smarter, tougher, and more useful in long-range air combat. The present plan includes a new indigenous radar, better avionics, stronger electronic warfare gear, updated navigation, and newer
weapons. In May 2026, reports said the Defence Ministry had issued a request for proposal to fit about 258 Su-30MKI jets with a modern anti-jamming, anti-spoofing multi-constellation GPS antenna as part of the wider “Super Sukhoi” programme.
A lot of people talk about turning the Su-30MKI into a “missile truck,” but that is still mainly an expert idea and not an official IAF doctrine. The basic thought is simple. Instead of carrying many bombs, the jet could carry many long-range air-to-air missiles and attack enemy aircraft from far away. But for that to work well, the fighter also needs strong radar support, safe datalinks, and good help from airborne warning aircraft and ground networks. That is why radar and network support matter as much as missile numbers.

Recent pictures of China’s J-16 fighter carrying a very heavy missile load made many defence watchers talk about the “missile truck” idea again. The concept means a fighter is loaded mostly with air-to-air missiles so it can hit several targets in one fight. It is not about ground attack. It is about carrying a lot of long-range firepower and using the help of warning aircraft and linked radar systems to shoot first from far away.
That is why some analysts think the Su-30MKI could do a similar job for India. It is a large twin-engine fighter and already serves as one of the IAF’s main workhorses. The aircraft has enough space and payload capacity to carry heavier weapons than many smaller jets. So, if the upgrades are done well, it can become a much stronger BVR platform without turning into a pure “missile truck” in any official sense.

Virupaksha Radar and Astra Missiles
The heart of the Super Sukhoi plan is the indigenous Virupaksha AESA radar. DRDO showed the radar at Aero India 2025, and Janes reported that it is being designed for the Su-30MKI upgrade programme. The radar is meant to replace the older Bars radar and give the jet better detection, better tracking, and better resistance against electronic attack. Janes also reported that the radar uses GaN-based transmit and receive modules and that DRDO officials described it as a multimode system that can work in air-to-air, air-to-ground, air-to-sea, and navigation roles.
Weapons are also a big part of the plan. DRDO says the Astra BVRAAM is already in service and can hit targets over 100 km away. The IAF is also pushing for the longer-range Astra Mk-2, and DRDO newspaper clippings in 2026 said the force has asked DRDO to speed up that missile because India is now putting more focus on long-range air-to-air and air-to-ground weapons.
The same report also said the IAF is exploring upgrades to several Su-30MKI aircraft with Russian help while the IACCS air defence network is being improved too. In the same context, Air Marshal AK Bharti said, “we need to add enablers like for intelligence gathering besides air borne radars and mid air refullers”. That line shows why the jet needs more than just missiles. It needs a full combat system around it.
