RRP Electronics and Orvis Semi Partnership: RRP Electronics has teamed up with Orvis Semi Pvt Ltd to work on a new kind of low-light imaging sensor. These sensors are being made for defence, surveillance, and security use. The company says this move is a big push for India’s semiconductor and defence electronics space and fits well with the Government’s Make in India, Atmanirbhar Bharat, and Viksit Bharat goals. Recent reporting also said the two firms have signed an MoU for this work.
Orvis Semi will bring its sensor design skill, while RRP Electronics will use its semiconductor packaging and manufacturing strength. Orvis Semi has been developing CMOS-based low-light imaging sensors under the leadership of Prof. Mukul Sarkar of IIT Delhi. These sensors are said to work like smart surveillance tools because they can digitise images and handle low-light situations better than older systems.

What These New Sensors Will Do

The new sensors are meant to help India rely less on imported low-light imaging technology. That matters because defence and security systems often need very clear images even in dark or poor visibility conditions. The company says the new CMOS-based approach can offer more use, more flexibility, and better chances for local production than the older image intensifier tube method.
Rajendra Chodankar, Founder and Chairman of RRP Group of Companies, said the partnership is about building important technology inside India. He said the work can help India become a trusted source for next-generation imaging tools and support the country’s push for self-reliance in sectors that matter for national security. The company also said the goal is to create mission-ready and globally competitive products as the project moves from design work to full production.

How RRP Plans to Build it in India?
RRP Electronics says it will use its OSAT setup in Maharashtra to assemble and package the sensors. OSAT stands for Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test. The company describes itself as Maharashtra’s first operational OSAT facility, and its website also says it is driving India’s semiconductor push with packaging and testing capabilities from Maharashtra. RRP has also said it already invested in a dedicated mask set at a commercial fabrication facility for this project.
The big idea is to build a full chain inside India. That means sensor design, chip packaging, assembly, and system integration can all happen locally. RRP said its group company, RRP S4E Innovation, will help turn the sensors into full electro-optical solutions. Together with Orvis Semi’s design work, this creates a complete Indian value chain for low-light imaging technology.
