India’s biggest airbase in Khajuraho: The famous temple town of Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh, known all over the world for its history and tourism is now moving toward becoming a major name in India’s defence world. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has started the early process to set up what could become the country’s largest airbase here. This airbase will be very important for the Indian Air Force (IAF) as it will act as a key centre for fighter jets and large military transport planes.

As per the first plan the the government has already chosen about 1,000 acres of land near the present Khajuraho Airport for the new base. Once the necessary approvals are ready, the land buying work could start early next year.

VD Sharma Confirms the Development

Confirming the news, Member of Parliament and former Madhya Pradesh BJP president Vishnu Dutt Sharma said that he has been in regular touch with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh about making better use of the Khajuraho Airport. Sharma said, “I had been in regular discussions with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to ensure better utilisation of Khajuraho Airport.” He also shared that a survey took place recently at four airports – Prayagraj, Jhansi, Gwalior and Khajuraho. After the study Khajuraho was found to be the safest and most suitable location to build a full airbase.

Sharma added that the early work for this plan has already started. He explained that once all the first steps are done, this project will bring a huge change for both Khajuraho and the whole state of Madhya Pradesh. In his words, the airbase will “significantly boost not only Khajuraho’s strategic relevance but also Madhya Pradesh’s defence infrastructure.”

Why was Khajuraho Chosen?

Experts say there are many good reasons behind picking Khajuraho for this airbase. The area has very few people living around, which gives the Air Force a lot of space to expand and work safely. The location is also perfect because it is not too close or too far from the Pakistan border making it easier for quick missions if needed.

Right now Gwalior is the only airbase in Madhya Pradesh. The new Khajuraho airbase will support it by covering the same defence zone, helping aircraft move and operate faster. The flat land, dry weather, and low civilian movement in the area make it even more suitable for large aircraft and training work.

Another strong point is Khajuraho’s great road and air connections, which will make transporting military supplies and equipment easier. The town is also known as a big international tourist spot, which already gives it strong infrastructure like hotels, good roads, and an airport.
