Defence Minister on Naxalism: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Tuesday that the problem of Left Wing Extremism also known as Naxalism, is almost over in India. He praised the brave work of police and security forces for their nonstop efforts in fighting this issue. Singh was speaking during the Police Commemoration Day event held at the National Police Memorial in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi. He laid a wreath and took a salute from a ceremonial guard to honor the police personnel who lost their lives in service.

‘This Problem Is Now on the Verge of Becoming History’

While addressing the troops, Singh said, “The success of the campaign against Naxalites can we assessed from the fact that the Maoists, who once took up arms against the state, are today surrendering and integrating themselves into the mainstream of development. Due to the tireless efforts of the security forces, this problem is now on the verge of becoming history. All our security personnel deserve to be congratulated for this.”

The government has already said that the Naxal problem will fully end by March 2026. Singh reminded everyone how serious this issue once was and how far India has come since then. He said that for a long time, many districts in Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Maharashtra suffered because of Naxalism.

He explained that people in those areas lived in fear. “Schools in villages were closed, there were no roads and people lived in fear. We resolved to not let this problem persist any longer. The way our police, CRPF, BSF and local administration worked together in an organised manner is commendable,” he said.

Red Corridor to Growth Corridor

Singh shared that many of the regions once known as “Naxal hubs” are now changing into places of progress and education. He said, “The regions that were once ‘Naxal hubs’ are now turning into educational hubs.” He added that places that were earlier called the “red corridor” are now becoming “growth corridor.” According to him this big change was possible because of the hard work and courage of India’s police and security forces. He said their “very significant” contribution helped bring peace and development to these regions, reported ET.

Focus on Modernisation

Rajnath Singh also talked about how the government is working to modernise the police forces. He said the Modi government is giving more resources and budget for this purpose. But he also stressed that these “limited” resources must be used wisely. Singh said this can happen only when there is teamwork and proper coordination between different security agencies.

He also spoke about how the role of police has changed with time. He said, “In present times, the police not only has to fight crime but also ‘against perception’.” This means police now have to deal with how people see them, not just with criminal activities.
