India-UAE Defence Alliance: $5 Billion UAE Investment Boosts India Defence Partnership

India and the UAE strengthened defence ties with a $5 billion investment plan, joint production of drones and missiles, maritime security cooperation, and expanded partnerships in advanced military technology and defence manufacturing.

India-UAE Deals, India-UAE Defence Alliance

India-UAE Defence Alliance: India and the United Arab Emirates have taken their defence partnership to a much higher level after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Abu Dhabi on 15 May 2026. The two sides agreed on a new “Framework for the Strategic Defence Partnership” and said they want closer work in defence industry, maritime security, cyber defence, training, and new technology. This came as part of a wider push in the “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership” between the two countries.

What the New Defence Plan Covers

The new defence framework is not just about meetings and speeches. It covers real cooperation in defence industrial collaboration, innovation and advanced technology, training, exercises, education and doctrine, special operations and interoperability, maritime security, cyber defence, secure communications and information exchange. That means both countries now want to work together on equipment, skills, and security systems in a more formal way.

The visit also brought fresh investment news. The two leaders welcomed USD 5 billion in investment into India from UAE entities. This includes USD 3 billion from Emirates NBD in RBL Bank, USD 1 billion from ADIA with NIIF for infrastructure projects, and USD 1 billion from the International Holding Company in Sammaan Capital. India also said bilateral trade crossed US$ 100 billion in FY 2024-25, and later official updates put trade at US$ 101.25 billion in FY 2025-26.

Industry Work Is Also Growing

The defence push is not only happening at government level. India and the UAE have already been building industry links through the India-UAE Defence Industry Partnership Forum, which has met for the last two consecutive years. Earlier official talks also pointed to joint manufacturing ideas like the ICOMM and CARACAL small arms model, along with co-development in new defence technology. India’s defence exports also hit a record ₹38,424 crore in FY 2025-26, showing how fast the sector is growing.

One big reason this matters is the growing focus on making and sharing defence products, not just buying them. The new framework gives both sides room to work on drones, missiles, naval platforms, secure systems, and other advanced tools. That fits India’s push for stronger defence manufacturing and the UAE’s search for trusted long-term partners.

Sea Routes and Safety

Maritime security remains a very serious part of the relationship. The Gulf is a sensitive area, and safe sea routes matter for both countries. India has said that the UAE is an important partner for security in the Indian Ocean and the Gulf, especially because of the role these waters play in energy and trade. The Strait of Hormuz is especially important for India’s oil supply, and recent regional tensions have made this issue more urgent.

The concern is also human, not just strategic. India condemned attacks in the region after Indian workers were affected in Fujairah, and that matched the UAE’s own security worries. With millions of Indians living in the UAE, the safety of the Indian diaspora has become another big part of the bilateral bond.

A Relationship Built on Trade and Trust

The defence talks sit inside a much wider economic and energy partnership. India and the UAE want trade to grow to US$ 200 billion by 2032, and they are also working on energy security, strategic petroleum reserves, and other long-term links. The UAE has become one of India’s most important partners because the relationship is now about business, defence, energy, and people-to-people ties all at once.
