India Enters Elite Missile Defence Club: Following a string of landmark weapon trials, India has officially entered the elite global league of strategic military powers. Three consecutive missile flight tests were carried out by Defence Research and Development Organisation off the eastern coast, over a grueling 24 hours from June 10th-11th. They verified an extremely sophisticated, multi-layered strategic umbrella which can detect and destroy incoming long range attacks.

With two consecutive missile flight tests, the successful completion of India’s Phase II Ballistic Missile Defence system has been established. As per sources in defence establishment, two different types of interceptor missiles. It is developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation and capable of terminating hostile incoming missile threat at different ranges were launched. Validation was done for both exo-atmospheric and endo-atmospheric interception.

A key component of India’s evolving missile shield is the Phase-II Ballistic Missile Defence programme. It includes the AD-1 interceptor and the upcoming AD-2 interceptor.

The AD-1 interceptor has been designed to engage medium- and long-range ballistic missile threats, including missiles in the 5,000-kilometre class. The future AD-2 interceptor is expected to further enhance India’s ability to counter even more advanced threats, including intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM)-class targets.

Alongside the historic ballistic missile defence breakthroughs, the defense establishment achieved an equally crucial naval milestone during the same testing window. The Defence Research and Development Organisation carried out the maiden flight test of its indigenous Naval Anti-Ship Missile-Medium Range.

“The interceptors successfully engaged their respective targets. The systems are designed and developed with the latest technologies to address emerging missile threats,” the ministry said in a statement. This maiden flight test successfully demonstrated India’s anti-ship defence capability at medium range, providing the Indian Armed Forces with a powerful new maritime strike option.

Strategic Validation

The complex missions were closely monitored from a centralized command post by top military brass and senior bureaucratic figures. Secretary of the Department of Defence Research and Development and Defence Research and Development Organisation Chairman Rajesh Kumar Singh praised the highly coordinated efforts of scientists, technicians, and local industry partners for executing multiple complicated launches within 24 hours.

“The Defence Research and Development Organisation has successfully demonstrated multiple crucial technologies bolstering the nation’s defence capabilities against different types of enemy threats. These tests have put India in the elite group of nations having Ballistic Missile Defence Capabilities to engage Ballistic Missiles up to Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles,” Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced in an official public briefing.

The Ballistic Missile Defence program began in the early 2000s to counter growing regional missile capabilities. Phase-I of the project, which focused on intercepting shorter-range threats up to 2,000 kilometers, was cleared for deployment several years ago.

The recent Phase-II successes prove India can stop much faster and more dangerous Intermediate-Range Ballistic Missiles and Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles. This achievement places India in a small group of countries with verified long-range missile defense capabilities, alongside the United States, Russia, Israel and China.
