India and South Korean K30 Biho Air Defence System: After Operation Sindoor and the tense days that followed, India has started thinking even more about air threats that fly low and fast. The main worry is not only big fighter jets. It is also drones, helicopters, cruise missiles, and other small aerial weapons that can come in close and fast.

Official government material on Operation Sindoor says Indian forces used air defence systems, electronic warfare, and the IACCS network to build a strong shield during the action, reported Defence.in. Recent India-South Korea talks also show that both sides are now looking at a third phase of defence cooperation, with more work on anti-aircraft guns and missile systems.

Because of this new thinking, South Korea’s K30 Biho has come back into focus. Recent reports say the Indian Army may place a fresh request before the Defence Acquisition Council again, so the older stalled plan can move forward with a new Acceptance of Necessity, or AoN. Those same reports say the Biho had already cleared earlier trials and got DAC approval in 2021, but the process later stopped.

What is K30 Biho Air Defence System?

The K30 Biho is a South Korean short-range air defence vehicle. Its name is often given as “Flying Tiger”. Hanwha describes it as a hybrid anti-air weapon system made for armored and mechanized units that need protection against low-flying air targets. The system uses twin 30 mm guns, radar, and electro-optical gear. Public reference material says each gun can fire around 600 rounds per minute. It also uses KP-SAM Chiron missiles, so it can hit targets beyond gun range too. The radar and sighting suite help it detect and track targets even in hard weather.

The tracked version is built on the K200 chassis, which makes it useful with tanks and other heavy units on rough ground. Later, Hanwha also fielded a wheeled version called K30W Cheonho, which entered service with the Republic of Korea Army in 2021. That newer path shows how the Biho family has kept growing with time.

How does the Affect India?

For India, the Biho would sit in the same job space as the Russian Tunguska. That means it is meant to protect moving troops from sudden air attacks at short range. The big difference, as recent reporting and public product material suggest, is that the South Korean system brings newer digital fire control, modern sensors, and a more up-to-date electronics package. That is why it is getting attention again.

The South Korea link is already strong in India. The Army already operates the K-9 Vajra-T, a 155 mm/52-calibre tracked howitzer made in India by Larsen & Toubro with technology transfer from Hanwha Aerospace. MEA also said in April 2026 that Korea already supplies K9 Vajra systems and anti-aircraft systems, and that the next phase of cooperation may bring greater technology transfer, co-development, and co-design.
