Western Air Command in Ladakh: The Western Air Command of the Indian Air Force has said its teams have already saved 143 lives through casualty evacuation work in the Ladakh sector during 2026. The latest mission moved five very sick patients from Ladakh to Chandigarh for better treatment. The move was done in hard weather and at very high altitude, which makes flying in Ladakh tough and risky. The WAC is based at Subroto Park in New Delhi and oversees more than 50 bases, so it handles a big share of IAF air work in the west and north.

The airlift mission
The Air Force said the rescue flight carried three Indian Army personnel, one dependent and one Ladakhi civilian. It used C-17 and AN-32 aircraft to move the patients safely and quickly. The patients were taken to Chandigarh for advanced medical care. The WAC also shared pictures of the mission on social media.

“The Indian Air Force successfully undertook a critical Medical Evacuation (MEDEVAC) mission from Ladakh, airlifting five Dangerous Ill Listed (DIL) patients for advanced medical care at Chandigarh. The patients comprised three Indian Army personnel with one dependent and one Ladakhi civilian,” it posted.

What DIL means?
A Dangerously Ill List, or DIL, patient is someone whose health is very serious and can get worse very fast. The medical meaning is used for people who need urgent care without delay. In Ladakh, this kind of evacuation is extra hard because the region has thin air, rough weather and difficult flying conditions.
The Air Force said the mission was not only about moving patients. It was also about giving them a fair chance to reach better treatment in time. That is why these flights matter so much in remote areas like Ladakh, where hospital access can be limited and every minute counts.

Joint Operations work in the Background
Earlier this year, the Western Air Command also held a high-level joint operations conclave under the All Domain Joint Operations 2026 framework. The meeting took place on February 5 and 6, 2026, and it focused on better teamwork between the services at the operational level. Officers from the Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff, the Indian Army, the Indian Navy, the Defence Space Agency and the Defence Intelligence Agency joined senior Indian Air Force leaders in the conclave.
