Captain Animesh Patni Vir Chakra: Group Captain Animesh Patni of the Indian Air Force has been named among the Vir Chakra awardees for Operation Sindoor. The official Independence Day 2025 award list from the Ministry of Defence shows that 15 Vir Chakras were approved in all, and 9 of them went to Indian Air Force personnel. The Ministry also said the full award list had 127 gallantry awards and 40 distinguished service awards.
Patni’s name appears in the Air Force list as Group Captain Animesh Patni, Flying (Pilot). Public reports say he was the officer commanding the S-400 unit that played a key part in the operation. NDTV’s account says he led the first launch of an S-400 missile from Adampur on May 7 during the strikes. Reuters later reported that Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh said India shot down six Pakistani military aircraft in the May fighting, including one large aircraft at about 300 km, which he described as the largest surface-to-air kill in India’s history.

What is Vir Chakra?
The Vir Chakra is one of India’s top wartime gallantry awards. The Indian Air Force says it is given for acts of gallantry in the presence of the enemy.
