FCAS Sixth-Generation Fighter Jet Program: India has been formally invited by France to join its ultra-modern sixth generation fighter program. After the abrupt demise of a Franco-German aerospace project, diplomatic sources from France conveyed that “everything is open” for India to be an integral partner.
The surprise offer from France comes at the wake of a substantial setback in a key European defense collaboration. France, Germany, later on Spain began building the FCAS fighter aircraft program in 2017 aiming to develop the next generation fighter to replace existing Rafale by 2040. However, the project has been brought to a halt after bitter, decade-long infighting between European aviation titans, Dassault and Airbus.
After Germany officially withdrew from the collaboration in order to build their own planes, France is proactively reshaping its strategies. Rather than pausing work, French officials are looking beyond Europe in order to secure a trustworthy partner with a robust manufacturing base. French officials perceive India as their most reliable strategic ally in Asia.
What is the FCAS Sixth-Generation Fighter Jet Program ?
The Future Combat Air System (FCAS) launched by France and Germany in 2017 and subsequently joined by Spain was a joint European project initiated to develop a sixth-generation fighter aircraft and its coupled ecosystem. It comprises autonomous drones, AI, cloud-based systems of combat management and stealth technologies. It is valued at a projected 100 billion dollars to determine the future of European combat aviation by the middle of the 21 st century.
The fighter jets under the FCAS will be constructed based on a system of systems concept. In this a sixth-generation fighter jet will fight along with drones and networked combat platforms in order to have domination over the future battlefield.

The groundwork for this historic deal was discussed during the 6th India-France Annual Defence Dialogue in Bengaluru. Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and French Minister of the Armed Forces Catherine Vautrin held long talks about future military needs.
What is a Sixth-Generation Jet System?

The Indian Ministry of Defence is currently studying the financial and technical costs of the French proposal before making an official move. This decision comes just ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s high-profile visit to France for the upcoming G7 Summit. Behind the scenes, French engine manufacturer Safran is already negotiating a separate deal to help India build a high-thrust fighter jet engine.
