Virat 1 Sink Near Oman: An India-flagged mechanised sailing vessel, MSV Virat 1, sank off the coast of Oman on Sunday after it had a mechanical problem at sea. The ship was around 80 nautical miles east of Ras Al Hadd on the morning of June 14. It had 14 Indian crew members on board. The vessel first suffered an engine failure, then it started taking on water, and after that it went down. A rescue effort was launched quickly with help from Omani authorities, the US Navy and nearby commercial ships.
The US Navy got the alert after the vessel was reported in distress. It then sent help to the area. A US Navy P-8 maritime patrol aircraft was sent out, and it dropped a life raft near the sinking vessel. The aircraft also watched the crew evacuation. The US Navy also arranged help from MV Jabal Ali 9, a St Kitts and Nevis-flagged merchant vessel that was sailing nearby. The crew members moved into the life raft as Virat 1 kept sinking.
What the Indian Embassy said
The Indian Embassy in Muscat confirmed the incident and said rescue work had begun with Omani support. It said: “The Mission has learnt of an incident involving an Indian Flagged Mechanised Sailing Vessel Virat 1, off the coast of Oman, reportedly embarked with 14 Indian crew. Search and Rescue is being coordinated with the Omani authorities and vessels in vicinity of the incident.”
Later, the embassy gave another update and said: “It has emerged that the vessel experienced an engine failure, and the crew eventually transferred safely to a life raft. Rescue operation is presently underway through ships in vicinity, under coordination of Omani authorities.” This update made clear that the crew had already moved to safety even though the ship itself was lost.
DGS confirms all 14 crew are safe
The Mission has learnt of an incident involving an Indian Flagged Mechanised Sailing Vessel Virat 1, off the coast of Oman, reportedly embarked with 14 Indian crew. Search and Rescue is being coordinated with the Omani authorities and vessels in vicinity of the incident.

The Directorate General of Shipping later said all 14 seafarers had been safely accounted for. It said the rescue stayed on track because of fast emergency steps and close teamwork with Omani authorities, the Indian Embassy in Oman and other maritime groups.
The DGS statement said “The Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) confirms that all 14 Indian seafarers aboard MSV VIRAT-1 have been safely accounted for following the vessel’s sinking approximately 80 nautical miles off Ras Al Hadd, Oman. Swift emergency response procedures, continuous coordination with Omani authorities, the Embassy of India in Oman, and maritime stakeholders ensured the safety of the crew. DGS remains committed to the safety, security, and welfare of Indian seafarers and continues to monitor the situation closely,”
The incident ended with all 14 Indian crew members safe, even though the ship could not be saved. The rescue moved across sea and air, with several parties working together in a short time.
