India war preparation: India needs armed forces that can fight many types of wars at the same time, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan said while speaking at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. He explained that India faces terrorism and also land disputes with nearby countries. Because of this, the country must be ready for short and very intense fights as well as long wars that mainly happen on land.
He said Operation Sindoor showed how short and powerful a modern conflict can be. At the same time, land disputes can turn into long battles. He made it clear that India should stay strong and alert at all times.

Operation Sindoor: A new way
General Chauhan said one big lesson from Operation Sindoor was that modern wars cannot stay limited to one area anymore. He explained that fighting on land, sea, air, space, cyber, and even the human mind now happens together. Because of this, he said multi-domain operations are no longer a choice but a must.
He clearly explained this point by saying, “This was clearly visible in Operation Sindoor. In a war which lasted only about four days, giving India a decisive victory, all domains of warfare were used simultaneously with a great amount of tempo,” he said.
He added that terrorism and grey-zone warfare will continue to trouble India. These threats need both defensive and offensive action from the armed forces.
India to Protect its deterrence power
The CDS said India cannot allow its military deterrence to weaken. He pointed out that both of India’s main adversaries have nuclear weapons. He did not name them directly but made the message clear. News agency PTI reported his remarks.
He said, “What kind of threats and challenges should India be prepared for? This should be based on two facts. Both our adversaries—one is a nuclear-weapon state and one is a nuclear-armed state—hence we should not allow that level of deterrence to be breached,” he said.

General Chauhan also explained what kind of wars India should prepare for. He said, “We should be prepared to fight short-duration, high-intensity conflicts to deter terrorism, something like Operation Sindoor. We should be prepared for a land-centric, long-duration conflict because we have land disputes. Yet, we should try and avoid it,” PTI quoted the CDS as saying.
He also stressed that future wars will need strong teamwork not only between the Army, Navy, and Air Force but also with cyber forces, space forces, and teams working in the cognitive domain. He said new technologies like AI, quantum tech, hypersonics, robotics, and edge computing are changing how wars are fought.
