Sukhoi Su-30MKI upgrade: IAF planning to turn the fighter jets into ‘Super Sukhoi’?

The Indian Air Force plans to upgrade its Sukhoi Su-30MKI fleet under the ‘Super Sukhoi’ programme, adding new radars, sensors, and Indian-made systems to extend their service life by two decades.

Su-30MKI Upgrade

Sukhoi Su-30MKI upgrade: The Indian Air Force (IAF) is planning a major upgrade for its Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter jets to make them stronger and ready for future wars. The IAF has been facing a shortage of fighter squadrons, with only 29 active squadrons right now, far below the approved strength of 42. The delivery of the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas Mk1A has also not started yet, which has made this upgrade even more important.

The Sukhoi Su-30MKI jets were first added to the IAF in 2002. After more than twenty years of service, they are now set to get a major boost in technology. The new plan will extend their life for another two decades. The jets will get new Indian-made systems, making them more advanced and powerful.

Sukhoi Su-30MKI upgrade

The new upgrade is called the “Super Sukhoi” programme or “Su-30MKI upgrade.” According to an Indian Express report, the defence ministry is currently studying the plan before it gets full approval. The upgrade will include new radars, infrared sensors, an electronic warfare suite (EWS), advanced avionics, and a modern cockpit. These changes will make the aircraft more capable and better prepared for modern aerial combat.

An official told Indian Express, “It (the proposal) is currently being examined by the ministry of defence. Efforts are on to send it soon to the CCS (cabinet committee on security) for its sanction for the design and development phase.”

Once the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) approves the plan, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) will start the work to design and develop the new systems. Officials said the upgraded version of the aircraft, known as the final operational clearance (FOC) model, will be ready in about seven years.

India’s air power and self-reliance

In December, the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), led by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, already gave the green light to buy new electronic warfare systems for the Su-30MKI fleet. These new systems will include jammer pods, radar warning receivers, and other equipment that can protect the jets from enemy radars. These additions will improve the safety and fighting strength of the aircraft during missions.

The Su-30MKI has been carry many types of weapons and fly long distances, which makes it perfect for both attack and defence missions. The upcoming “Super Sukhoi” upgrade will make the jet far more powerful, with better sensors and weapons control systems.
