Tata C295 Military Aircraft: The first Made in India Airbus C295 military transport aircraft is getting close to roll-out from the Tata Advanced Systems Limited, or TASL, facility in Vadodara, Gujarat. This is a big moment for India’s aerospace field because it is the first time a private company in the country has built a full military aircraft production line from start to finish.
It also breaks the long hold that HAL had on military aircraft building for many years. Airbus and Tata had opened the Vadodara final assembly line in October 2024, and the first India-built aircraft was then expected to roll out in September 2026.

The C295 project is part of a 56-aircraft deal for the Indian Air Force. Under that plan, 16 aircraft are coming in fly-away condition from Spain, while the other 40 are being assembled in India. Airbus says the Indian line will handle more than 85% of structural and final assembly work, and around 13,000 detail parts are being made in India. That is why this programme is being seen as a serious push for “AatmaNirbhar Bharat”.

Tata C295 Military Aircraft: Features
The Airbus C295 is a twin-engine turboprop transport aircraft built for tough military jobs. Airbus says it can carry up to 9,000 kg of payload or up to 70 troops. It can also move 48 paratroops. The aircraft is made to work from rough and unpaved strips. Airbus lists a take-off run of 670 m and a landing roll of 320 m. It also has a rear ramp, which makes it easier to load cargo, vehicles and troops quickly.
The aircraft is useful for many kinds of work, not just transport. Airbus describes it as a flexible platform for tactical transport, surveillance, air-to-air refuelling and other missions. That mix of range, endurance and cabin space is part of why many air forces use it.
The Iran connection
The aircraft’s name also came up in online talk around a rescue mission in Iran. But Reuters later said there was no evidence that the viral photos connected to that story were authentic. So the safest and most accurate way to read that part is that the C295 was being talked about online, not that the rescue claim was proven.

Even so, the C295 has built a strong global name because it is seen as a sturdy and trusted aircraft for hard conditions. Its rear ramp, short-field ability and multi-role design are the main reasons it keeps getting attention.
Once the full delivery cycle is done, India will have the world’s largest C295 fleet. That will give the Indian Air Force a stronger reach in difficult places like Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, and the Northeast.
