Kaal Bhairava Combat AI Deal: India’s defence tech world has a new big headline. Kaal Bhairava, which is being called India’s first AI combat aircraft, will now be made in Europe. The company behind it, Flying Wedge Defence & Aerospace, or FWDA, has said the aircraft will be manufactured in Portugal with help from the European company SKETCHPIXEL LDA. Reports say this will be the first overseas manufacturing node for the platform.
This project is being talked about as a major step for India’s private defence sector. Earlier reports in November 2025 said the same project, then described as “Kaala Bhairava E2A2”, won a silver medal at ARCA 2025 in Croatia. That earlier coverage also called it India’s first AI-powered MALE autonomous combat aircraft.

What is Kaal Bhairava?
Kaal Bhairava is described as a Medium-Altitude Long-Endurance, or MALE, autonomous combat aircraft. In simple words, it is a long-flying machine made for modern warfare where computers and AI help with the job. Reports say it has a range of about 3,000 km and can stay in the air for more than 30 hours. It is also said to have AI-based target recognition, swarm coordination, encrypted communication systems, and autonomous mission planning.
The aircraft is being presented as part of the future of combat flying, where machines can act with less human input and work in networked systems. That is why the project has drawn so much attention in India and outside it too.
Why Portugal was chosen?
Portugal has been chosen for the first foreign production site. The new facility will be built there under a deal between FWDA and SKETCHPIXEL LDA. Reports say SKETCHPIXEL will bring fighter jet simulation technology, AI integration, communication systems, and NATO interoperability support to the project. FWDA, on the other hand, will keep the intellectual property rights, the core autonomous systems, and the airframe design.
The choice of Portugal also matters because it is a NATO member state. That gives the project a stronger European base and may help with wider defence cooperation and future export links.

Operation 777
The Portugal unit is part of FWDA’s bigger plan called “Operation 777”. Company statements say this plan is meant to build partnerships across seven continents and create deployment and integration hubs in 77 countries. The Portugal site is being described as the first international node in that long-term plan.
Basically, FWDA is trying to take an Indian-made autonomous aircraft idea and give it a global shape. The company wants its technology to travel far beyond one country.
