India Integrated Rocket Force: India is planning a new Integrated Rocket Force, or IRF, and the idea is to keep the country’s long-range conventional strike power under one roof. In very simple words, it would be a single strike force for missiles and rockets that are not nuclear. The plan is to bring systems like Pralay, BrahMos, long-range cruise missiles, and smart drones together so the Army, Navy, and Air Force can work in a more connected way. What the IRF would do?
The main aim of the IRF is easy to understand.
- It would help the three services act together better.
- It would allow faster precision strikes.
- It would cut down on duplication in missile command.
- It would keep conventional weapons separate from nuclear assets so there is less confusion in a crisis.
Defence thinkers say this kind of setup follows the style of special missile commands used by other major military powers.
The force is also expected to sit under the leadership of the Chief of Defence Staff, or CDS. That fits with India’s wider move toward integrated warfare, joint planning, and faster response systems. The same line of thinking was seen after Operation Sindoor, where official and strategic discussions pointed to the value of real-time battlefield awareness and integrated systems working together.
Weapons that may come under it
One of the most important weapons linked to this idea is the Pralay missile. MP-IDSA says Pralay is a quasi-ballistic surface-to-surface missile with a range of about 150–500 km. That makes it a strong option for quick conventional strikes on military targets. BrahMos is also expected to play a big part. It is a supersonic cruise missile, and the idea is that it could serve as the deep-strike weapon of the new force.
The IRF may also include surveillance drones, AI-enabled smart drones, loitering munitions, and swarm drone systems. These tools can help with target spotting, battlefield intelligence, and precision attacks. In simple terms, the force would not only throw missiles. It would also use drones and smart systems to find the target first and strike more cleanly after that.
Importance for India
The reason behind this idea is the need for faster battlefield action. Indian planners want better long-range attack options, stronger deterrence, and a system that can answer threats quickly without bringing in heavier forces too early. The concept also matches India’s larger defence reform push, which includes integrated theatre commands and unified logistics and intelligence.

Another big reason is clarity. The IRF is meant to stay separate from nuclear command and control. That separation matters because it can reduce mix-ups in a tense situation and make sure a conventional strike is not wrongly seen as something bigger. The IRF idea also sits neatly inside “Make in India” and defence self-reliance. Many of the systems linked to the force are being made or developed in India. That gives the country more control over its weapons and may also help future exports of Indian missile systems. In a bigger sense, the plan is about building a faster and more modern strike setup for the years ahead.
