MoD Signs ₹2,312 Crore Deal with HAL for 8 Dornier 228 Aircraft

The Ministry of Defence has signed a ₹2,312 crore deal with HAL to supply eight Dornier 228 aircraft to the Indian Coast Guard, boosting maritime security and supporting Make-in-India efforts.

HAL Dornier 228 Aircraft: India’s Ministry of Defence has made deal with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, also called HAL. HAL’s Transport Aircraft Division in Kanpur will build eight Dornier 228 planes for the Indian Coast Guard. The total cost of this deal is ₹2,312 crore. These planes will also come with special equipment that helps them do different types of work.

This purchase is being done under the Buy (Indian) category. This means the government is choosing to buy things that are made in India. The agreement was signed in New Delhi on February 12, 2026. Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh was there to see the signing happen.

How the New Planes will Help

The Dornier 228 planes will help the Indian Coast Guard protect the sea better. These aircraft can be used to watch over India’s waters and keep an eye on any danger. With these new planes, the Coast Guard will be stronger and faster in doing its duty.

The project is also good for job opportunities. When HAL builds these aircraft, many workers will get work. Not only HAL employees, but also many small companies and MSMEs that supply parts will benefit. This will help many families because more people will have jobs.

There will also be more work in Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul, which is also called MRO. This means people will be needed to fix and maintain the planes for many years. Technical support work will also continue for a long time.
