T-90MS Tanks: The T-90MS tank is making headlines again after Russia offered to build the advanced battle tank with India. Rosoboronexport has proposed making the tank in Indian factories instead of exporting it fully built from Russia. The offer comes soon after India produced its 1,000th T-90 Bhishma tank at the Heavy Vehicles Factory in Avadi, Chennai in May 2026.
The Army has used the T-90 family for years, and Indian factories already make many parts for the tank. That means a new T-90MS line would not start from zero. It would build on work that India already knows well. Reports say the older T-90 line in India has reached about 80% local content.

T-90MS Important
The T-90MS is the export version of Russia’s newer T-90M family. Rosoboronexport says the tank is made to hit enemy tanks, self-propelled guns and other armoured targets. The vehicle is also designed to fight enemy manpower.
The tank brings several upgrades over the older T-90S Bhishma. It uses a stronger 1,130 hp engine. It has better armour protection and a newer welded turret. It also uses the Kalina digital fire control system. That helps the crew aim better and hit targets faster. The tank is also built for night fighting. Its thermal sights help it see in dark, smoke and bad weather.
Another key feature is the hunter-killer setup. That means the commander can look for one target while the gunner attacks another. The tank also has a digital battlefield system so it can share information better with other units. This makes it easier to fight as a team during battle.
How India could gain from Local Production
If India approves the deal, it could bring many gains. Local production would help the defence industry grow. It would also support “Make in India” and “Aatmanirbhar Bharat”. India would not have to depend as much on foreign supply lines for parts, repairs and future upgrades. That matters a lot for a tank that must stay ready for long periods.

The Indian Army already operates one of the world’s largest T-90 fleets. India first signed the T-90 deal in 2001. At the start, many tanks were brought in fully built. Later, India moved to kits and then to much deeper local manufacturing. Indian firms learned to build the hull, turret, engine-related systems, electronics and many other support parts.
A local T-90MS line could also create skilled jobs and give Indian companies more experience with advanced armoured vehicles. It may also make maintenance easier and faster because the Army already knows this tank family very well.
