India C295 aircraft: India is close to getting its first home-made C295 military transport aircraft. The aircraft is expected to be handed over to the Indian Air Force in September 2026. It is being built at Tata Advanced Systems Limited’s final assembly line in Vadodara, Gujarat. This is a big step for India’s defence and aerospace work and a major win for “Make in India” and “Aatmanirbhar Bharat”. The project is also special because it is the first time a private Indian company is making a military aircraft in the country.
The first aircraft from the Indian production line completed its maiden test flight in June 2026, and the delivery plan points to September 2026 as the expected handover time. The Ministry of Defence has already said that “The first Made in India aircraft is expected from September 2026.”

What can the C295 do?
The Airbus C295 is a medium tactical transport aircraft. It is made for both military jobs and relief work. It can carry soldiers, cargo and medical patients. It can also help in disaster response, maritime patrol, special operations and logistics support. Airbus says the aircraft can carry around 70 military personnel or 48 paratroopers, and it can also be used for container loads, vehicles and pallets.
The aircraft is built for rough places too. It can take off and land on short, soft and unpaved runways. That makes it useful in border areas, mountains, deserts and remote regions. The Ministry of Defence says it has a rear ramp door for quick loading, troop drops and cargo drops. It also has flight endurance of up to 11 hours and can work in many weather conditions.
Part of Larger Deal
The C295 order is part of a much larger deal. In September 2021, the Ministry of Defence signed a contract with Airbus Defence and Space for 56 aircraft. Sixteen are being delivered in flyaway condition from Spain, while 40 are being made in India at Vadodara. The total cost was about ₹21,935 crore, or €2.6 billion.
This programme matters because it helps India replace its ageing Avro aircraft. It also builds a new defence manufacturing base inside the country. The government has said the project will reduce import dependence, support exports later on, and create a stronger aerospace ecosystem.

The MoD also noted that 96% of the total man-hour work for the aircraft will be done in India by the Tata consortium, with more than 13,400 detail parts, 4,600 sub-assemblies and all seven major component assemblies made in the country.

The Vadodara facility is India’s first private-sector military aircraft manufacturing line. It handles assembly, systems fitting, integration, testing, painting and final delivery. The project also uses Indian-made electronic warfare equipment from Bharat Electronics Limited and Bharat Dynamics Limited. The government says the aircraft will help the Indian Air Force with transport, troop movement, emergency work and support in hard terrain.
The C295 is not just another plane for India. It is a sign that the country is moving from buying defence hardware to making more of it at home. As the official release says, the project is meant to be a journey of “mutual cooperation, defence empowerment and self-reliance”.
