Hawk-I 900 India: Chennai-based Data Patterns has put forward a new fighter radar called the Hawk-I 900 GaN AESA Radar. It is still a prototype, and it has not entered active service yet, but it is already being seen as an important step for India’s defence industry. The radar is made for Indian fighter jets with tight nose space, especially the MiG-29, MiG-29K, LCA Tejas Mk1 and Tejas Mk1A.

Reports say it uses about 876 Gallium Nitride, or GaN, transmit and receive modules, which gives it strong power in a smaller frame.

This radar is important because many Indian fighters still depend on older radar systems that were built long ago. Those older systems are not as fast or flexible as modern AESA radars. The Hawk-I 900 is built to give better target spotting, faster tracking and stronger resistance to enemy jamming.

It is also meant to help India rely less on imported defence systems and more on home-grown technology. In simple words, it is a local answer to an old problem.

What the Hawk-I 900 can do

The Hawk-I 900 uses AESA technology, which means the radar beam can be steered electronically instead of moving a big antenna back and forth. That makes the radar quicker and more useful in combat.

Its GaN parts also help it produce more power while making less heat, which is good for performance and reliability. The radar is designed to work in air-to-air and air-to-ground roles so it can help in both interception and strike missions. It also has low-probability-of-intercept features, which make it harder for an enemy to detect while it is running.

The radar is also reported to have a wide field of view and strong multi-target tracking ability. That means a pilot can watch more of the sky at once and follow more than one enemy aircraft during a fight.

Some reports say it may detect fighter-sized targets at distances of more than 150 kilometres, though the exact range depends on the target, altitude and combat conditions. The compact design also makes installation easier on smaller fighter noses like those on the MiG-29 and Tejas.

What it could mean for India?

If the Hawk-I 900 is eventually used by the Indian Air Force, it could help old fighters stay useful for longer. It may improve pilot awareness, boost air combat strength and make the jets easier to support in India itself. It also fits well with India’s push for Atmanirbhar Bharat, since it shows that private Indian companies can build advanced military electronics at home.
