DRDO Indigenous Quantum Communication System: The Defence Research and Development Organisation has finished military field trials of its indigenous fibre-based Quantum Key Distribution, or QKD, system. The system was built with Bengaluru-based Taqbit Labs. DRDO says the work has now moved beyond lab testing and into a system that can be used in real defence settings. The aim is simple. It is to keep India’s strategic communication lines safe from future cyber attacks, including attacks that could come from quantum computers.
In its statement, DRDO said the team with its industry partner Taqbit Labs, Bengaluru, has “successfully architected and productised this advanced system to secure critical networks”. It also said the achievement “lays the foundation for large-scale, multi-hop quantum networks”.

How QKD works in simple words
Quantum Key Distribution is a smart way to share secret encryption keys. It uses the rules of quantum physics. That means if someone tries to peek at the data, the system can notice it. The key point is that any hidden spying can disturb the quantum signal. So the users can find out that someone tried to listen in. This is why QKD is seen as a very strong tool for secure communication.
Taqbit Labs describes QKD as a system where two users create a shared secret key that only they know. The company says the system is built to detect eavesdropping and to work over standard fibre optic networks. That makes it useful not only for defence, but also for other sensitive fields that need strong protection.
Why this milestone matters
This trial is important because it shows that India is moving closer to a full quantum-safe communication setup made inside the country. DRDO said the new system is meant to help build large, multi-hop quantum networks in the future. That could protect military communication, government systems, financial networks, telecom links, and other critical services from next-generation cyber threats.

DRDO also said this work builds on earlier lab proof and previous trials. The Tribune reported that DRDO had already shown quantum communication progress through the DRDO-Industry-Academia Centre of Excellence at IIT Delhi, and that the project was run under the “Design and Development of Photonic Technologies for Free Space QKD” programme. The same report said DRDO set up a Quantum Research Centre in Delhi in May 2025 to strengthen indigenous quantum work for defence use.
