Modi and Macron defense ties: During his busy bilateral program in Italy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also met with President Emmanuel Macron of France and his counterpart Rishi Sunak of the United Kingdom.

Macron and Modi have their first one-on-one encounter of the day. France is a major power in the Indo-Pacific region, and the presidents centred their discussions on the “Horizon 2047” Roadmap, which they established last year to chart the future for bilateral ties and cooperation in that region.

They talked about collaborating on defense, nuclear, space, education, combating climate change, digital public infrastructure, networking, and cultural projects like the National Museum partnership and strengthening people-to-people ties, according to the MEA. They decided to step up their strategic defense collaboration even more, emphasising Made in India—an effort that France has supported with open technology transfer—and working together to build next-generation equipment.

A strong and reliable Strategic Partnership between India and France is essential for a stable and prosperous global order, according to a report from the Indian government. “They also agreed to expand cooperation in the realms of AI, critical and emerging technologies, energy, and sports, while working closely in the context of the forthcoming AI Summit and United Nations Oceans Conference, both to be hosted in France in 2025,” the readout stated.

As the UK prepares for elections next month, the leaders met with Sunak. According to Times of India, they discussed regional and international concerns while expressing satisfaction with the progress in negotiating a free trade agreement between their two nations.

In addition to thanking Modi for sending “high level” delegates to the peace conference in Switzerland over Ukraine, Sunak congratulated Modi for winning a third term in the biggest democratic election in history.

Sunak and Modi talked about putting the India-UK Roadmap 2030 into action based on shared commitments on several issues. They were also pleased with the progress made in all areas of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, including relationships between people, trade and economic cooperation, defense and security, high-tech and critical sectors, and regular high-level political consultations. For the upcoming elections in the UK next month, Modi sent his warmest wishes to the populace.
