India-Maldives Military Exercise: The joint military exercise EKUVERIN 2025 is being held in Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala. Soldiers from the Indian Army and troops from the Maldives National Defence Force are training side by side. The exercise has reached its middle stage and will continue for two full weeks. The Ministry of Defence confirmed that the exercise started on December 2 and will end on December 15.
This is the 14th time India and the Maldives are holding this exercise together. Both countries take turns to host it. They started EKUVERIN in 2009 and since then it has grown into an important military activity. The exercise helps both nations build trust and improve teamwork. It also supports strong defence ties between the two close neighbours in the Indian Ocean.
Focus on Real Combat
The Indian Army has sent 45 soldiers from a battalion of the Garhwal Rifles. The Maldives has also sent the same number of troops from the MNDF. Both teams train together every day. They work in jungle areas or near townss and along the coast. These locations help soldiers practice real situations they may face during missions.
The training gives special attention to counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations. Soldiers practice small team actions and learn how to plan missions together. They also improve their combat skills and coordination. Amphibious and littoral operations remain a an important part of the training because both countries face security challenges near the sea.
India-Maldives Military Ties
“Ekuverin,” which means “Friends” in Dhivehi, truly shows the spirit of this exercise. Soldiers build strong bonds as they train together every day. Their teamwork reflects friendship and respect between the two forces.
The Ministry of Defence said EKUVERIN 2025 shows the growing defence partnership between India and the Maldives. Both nations want peace and safety in the Indian Ocean Region. Regular exercises like this keep their forces ready to handle common threats and emergencies.
India and the Maldives share a long and friendly relationship. India was one of the first countries to recognise the Maldives after its independence in 1965.
