The Defence Ministry signed an MoU with TIDCO to build a modern mechanical and material testing facility in Tiruchi, aiming to boost local defence production under the Defence Testing Infrastructure Scheme.

Defence Testing Facility in Tiruchi

Defence Testing Facility in Tiruchi: India is moving ahead to build more defence tools and machines right here at home. To support that goal, the Ministry of Defence has signed an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) to build a brand-new testing centre in Tiruchi, Tamil Nadu. This modern testing place will focus on mechanical and material testing and will be set up under the Defence Testing Infrastructure Scheme (DTIS). The location for this new facility is inside the Tamil Nadu Defence Industrial Corridor.

Senior officials from the Ministry of Defence and Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation Ltd. (TIDCO) came together to exchange the MoU papers. This happened in New Delhi on July 28. Sanjeev Kumar, who is the Secretary for Defence Production, was also present during the event, reported The hindu.

This upcoming testing centre will not just be owned by the government. A group of companies and government bodies together will build and run it. Micro Labs, which is a private company, is leading this group, also called a Special Purpose Vehicle or SPV. Along with Micro Labs, other members of this SPV are TIDCO, Bharat Earth Movers Ltd. (BEML), Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. (HAL), and Vaidheswaran Industries.

Big Support from Government

The government is helping with money too. Under the DTIS plan, the government will pay 75% of the cost as a grant. The rest 25% will come from the SPV group, which includes both government and private companies.

This whole testing project is a part of a much larger plan. The government had started DTIS with a total budget of ₹400 crore. The main aim of this scheme is to build testing labs with the latest technology, so that Indian companies can test their defence products inside the country. This will help India depend less on imported military items and make more of its own defence tools.
