UK Royal Navy Plans to Deploy Autonomous Ships and Fighter Drone

The Royal Navy will start using autonomous ships, underwater sensors, and fighter-style drones next year.

UK Navy Autonomous Ships

UK Navy Autonomous Ships: The Royal Navy says it will bring its first real autonomous systems into the North Atlantic next year. Navy leaders shared this plan during the International Sea Power Conference in London. They say this move is very important because the ocean around the UK is getting more dangerous and busy.

The new systems are part of big ideas the Navy calls Atlantic Bastion, Atlantic Shield and Atlantic Strike. These ideas will slowly change the Navy from a normal fleet into a hybrid fleet that mixes crewed and uncrewed systems.

Growing tensions in the Atlantic

General Sir Gwyn Jenkins gave a strong warning during the event. He said Russia is sending more submarines and special spy ships, like the ship Yantar, into the Atlantic. He said “the advantage that we have enjoyed in the Atlantic since the end of the Cold War is at risk. We are holding on, but not by much.” His message was clear: the UK must act fast or risk falling behind.

Next year the Navy will place the first undersea acoustic sensors in the water. These sensors will help build a giant underwater network to track threats. Jenkins said “next year, we will have our first sensors in the water,” and he also said that industry is already spending four times more than the Government to support this project.

Jenkins also said the Navy will sign “our contracts for Atlantic Bastion as a service” next year. This means the Navy will pay companies to deliver the capability instead of buying everything itself. He said this will cut slow paperwork and bring new systems faster.

The Navy will also put its first autonomous escort ship in the water within the same timeline. Jenkins repeated his promise and said “we will get our first autonomous escort in the water within two years, and we will.” This ship will help protect the North Atlantic and support the Atlantic Shield plan for northern defence.

Another big step is a new drone that acts like a small fast jet. The Navy will launch this drone from a UK carrier for the first time next year. Jenkins said “we will get a demonstrator for our fast jet fighter capability off the carrier next year.” This test is a major part of the Atlantic Strike idea, which looks at future air attack missions.

More Allies to Join

The Navy knows it cannot protect the Atlantic by itself. Jenkins said Norway already plans to join the Atlantic Bastion network. Norway will connect its new Type 26 frigates to the system. He said “we need other allies together. We will build a network that we can connect to our systems and capabilities.”

Jenkins ended with a strong message about speed. He said “the pace of technological change will never be as slow again as it is today” and also “now is the time for action.” He warned that waiting too long will be risky. At the end he said, “We are moving out because we have no choice. Our job is to be ready.”
