Malaysia Former Army Corruption Case: Malaysia’s anti-corruption body said on Wednesday that two very senior former military leaders will go to court this week. This case is one of the biggest corruption cases ever linked to the country’s armed forces. The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission said it received approval from the Attorney General to file charges after a long investigation into defence equipment deals.
The agency said former army chief Hafizuddiean Jantan, his wife Salwani Anuar, and former defence forces chief Mohamad Nizam Jaafar will all be charged. Hafizuddiean was the army chief from September 2023 until late 2025. He and his wife will face charges under money laundering laws. Mohamad Nizam, who led the defence forces from January to December 2025, will face charges that include abuse of power and criminal breach of trust.
Hafizuddiean, who is 57, was sent on work leave in December and chose early retirement in January. Mohamad Nizam, aged 59, also retired earlier this month.

Inside the corruption investigation
These court cases show a major step forward in a large corruption probe that began last month. The agency started investigating after receiving complaints about bribery, unfair deals, and groups working together secretly to win military contracts. The anti-corruption agency said the case is very sensitive because the people involved held extremely high positions.
During the investigation, officers raided companies suspected of working together to win army deals. They arrested senior military officers and seized millions of ringgit in cash. Luxury items were also taken and several bank accounts linked to defence contracts were frozen.
Malaysia has charged lower-level and retired officers before, but this is believed to be the first time former army and defence chiefs, the highest uniformed roles in the country, have faced corruption charges.
Government response
The anti-corruption agency also said two more senior officers are still under investigation. Their case files are almost ready and will soon be sent to prosecutors. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim ordered all military procurement contracts to be frozen until a full review is done to make sure rules and laws are followed.
Earlier on Wednesday, Anwar spoke openly about problems in defence buying. He said the defence sector has often been open to abuse and hidden dealings. While announcing tighter checks and plans to strengthen local suppliers, he gave a strong warning.

“As we all know, when it comes to defense, it’s been a place for ‘songlap’ (embezzle) and ‘sakau’ (steal), where corruption in the defence sector was not merely a financial issue, but a direct threat to national security,” he said. “It is impossible to build a strong defence foundation if we are still trapped by personal interests, commissions and wealth.”
The government says these steps are needed to protect national safety and restore trust in the military system.
