INS Tamal: The commissioning ceremony will take place in the Russian port city of Kaliningrad, where the ship was built at the Yantar shipyard. Vice Admiral Sanjay J Singh, who is in charge of the Western Naval Command, will lead the ceremony. Many important defence officials from both India and Russia will attend this big event.
INS Tamal is a modern stealth warship that mixes the best of Indian and Russian technologies. It is 125 meters long and weighs around 3900 tonnes. The ship will join the Western Fleet of the Indian Navy, also known as the ‘Sword Arm’ reported Hindustan Times. Commander Vivek Madhwal from the Indian Navy said it would be a symbol of both power and friendship between the two countries.

All about INS Tamal
The new warship carries many deadly weapons and advanced systems for surveillance and warfare. About 26% of its parts are made in India, including the BrahMos cruise missile. This missile can hit targets on both land and sea from far away. INS Tamal is the second ship of the Tushil class. These are improved versions of the older Talwar and Teg classes. India is also building two similar warships called INS Triput class at Goa Shipyard. Russia is helping with the design and technology. When all ships are ready, the Navy will have ten ships with similar weapons and sensors, making training and maintenance easier.
This ship is the last Krivak class frigate India will get from a foreign country. Over the past 20 years, India has inducted eight such frigates from Russia. Now the focus is on building more of these powerful warships at home. A group of Indian experts supervised the ship’s construction in Kaliningrad. The Directorate of Ship Production, under the Controller of Warship Production and Acquisition, guided the project from the Navy’s headquarters in New Delhi.
INS Tamal has many new weapons that make it stronger than earlier warships. It carries vertical-launch surface-to-air missiles, a better 100 mm gun, powerful torpedoes, and anti-submarine rockets that can attack quickly. It also has advanced radar and fire control systems to track and destroy threats. The ship comes with a strong electronic warfare suite and is fully ready for network-based combat.
Commander Madhwal explained that the ship has great speed and firepower for its size. He said, “Tamal punches well above its weight with a very high tonnage to firepower ratio, extended endurance, and a top speed in excess of 30 knots.”

INS Tamal Features
More than 250 sailors will operate this warship. They have gone through tough training on land and at sea, including in freezing temperatures in Russian cities like St. Petersburg and Kaliningrad. The ship has already completed tough sea trials over a period of three months.
The name “Tamal” has deep meaning. It refers to a mythical sword used in battles by Indra, the king of the gods in Indian mythology. The ship’s mascot is also unique. It combines Jambavant, the powerful bear king from Indian stories, with the Eurasian brown bear, which is Russia’s national animal.
The design of INS Tamal gives it better stealth, which means enemy radars will find it hard to detect. It is also more stable on the sea. The warship comes with the BrahMos supersonic missile system, which can destroy enemy ships and land targets fast. It also has a surface surveillance radar, HUMSA NG Mk II sonar for underwater threats, and many Indian-made weapons and sensors.
