A young Merchant Navy officer from Odisha has gone missing while on duty near Malaysian waters. The shipping company has started search operations as the family seeks government help.

Odisha Merchant Navy Officer Missing: A young merchant navy officer from Bhadrak district in Odisha has gone missing while working on a ship near Malaysian waters. The news has shocked his family and caused worry back home. The missing sailor is Sarthak Mahapatra. He was working as a cadet with Anglo-Eastern Ship Management and was part of the crew on a ship called EA Jersey.

Sarthak was on duty when the ship was sailing back to Singapore after a long journey from West Africa. Nobody knows exactly what happened to him. The situation is still unclear and the company has started a search at sea.

Last Call Before He Disappeared

Sarthak joined Anglo-Eastern Ship Management on July 14, 2025. According to his family, he last spoke to his mother on a video call on February 2. On the same day, he also talked to other family members and friends. The next day, February 3, his mother tried calling him again but he did not answer.

Later, the company sent a letter to the family saying Sarthak was missing. They said he was last seen going into his cabin on the morning of February 3.

Search Continues

Around 8.30 am that day, the ship’s chief officer went to check on Sarthak and found his cabin empty. A full search was done on the ship but he was not found. An alarm was raised and all crew members were counted. Sarthak was not on board. The ship slowed down and searched nearby waters. The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Mauritius was also informed. Still, there has been no sign of him.

Sarthak’s mother has asked the government for help. She said, “The ship had gone to West Africa from China, and from there it was supposed to return to its origin through Singapore. They were near Singapore on February 2 when he spoke to me, other family members and friends.”

She also said, “We have submitted applications to the authorities and have also mailed CM Mohan Majhi and the Director General of Police. I request the governments to look into the matter and help bring my son back.”
