Vice Admiral Ajay Kochhar: Vice Admiral Ajay Kochhar took charge as the 48th Vice Chief of the Naval Staff on 29 May 2026. On the same day, he paid tribute to the brave soldiers at the National War Memorial in New Delhi by laying a floral wreath. Before this new role, he was serving as the Commander-in-Chief of the Andaman and Nicobar Command, which is India’s only integrated tri-services theatre command.
Strong Naval Career Behind Him
Vice Admiral Kochhar is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Pune, and he joined the Indian Navy on 1 July 1988. He is a specialist in Gunnery and Missile Systems and has worked in many command, operational, and staff roles for more than 37 years. Over his long service, he has also handled important posts at Naval Headquarters, where he worked on planning and policy related duties.

During his career, he has commanded INS Nashak, INS Vibhuti, and INS Kirpan. He also served as the commissioning commanding officer of the frigate INS Trikand. Later, he commanded the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya, and during his time there, the ship’s air wing was fully integrated and made operational. He studied further at the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, the Naval War College, Goa, and the Royal College of Defence Studies, UK.
Jobs Before Becoming Vice Chief
After being promoted to Flag Rank in 2018, he served as the Assistant Controller of Carrier Projects and the Assistant Controller of Warship Production and Acquisition. In 2021, he took command of the Western Fleet. Later, he became the Commandant of the National Defence Academy, where he worked to improve training standards and infrastructure.

He then took over as Chief of Staff, Western Naval Command on 25 May 2024, at a time when the western maritime theatre was under pressure. In that role, he helped lead the Navy’s response during Operation Sindoor and also handled both regular and non-regular threats along the western seaboard. For his service, he received the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 2022 and the Param Vishisht Seva Medal in 2026.
Vice Admiral Kochhar has now moved into the top deputy role in the Navy, and Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan has been named the next chief of the Western Naval Command. The transfer marks another major change in the Navy’s senior leadership.
