INS Himgiri: The Indian Navy has added another powerful warship to its fleet. This is the third ship in the Nilgiri-class series under Project 17A. It is named INS Himgiri and is the first one from this class built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata. This new ship brings a lot of strength to India’s maritime power and is made to handle both today’s and tomorrow’s sea challenges.
This ship is actually a modern version of an older ship that had the same name. The earlier INS Himgiri was a Leander-class frigate that served the country for 30 years before it got retired in 2005. The new Himgiri now comes with the latest weapons and sensors, just like other Nilgiri-class warships.

It carries a supersonic missile system that can hit surface targets quickly. It also has a medium-range air missile system to stop enemy planes or missiles from attacking. The warship includes a 76 mm gun along with other fast-firing guns like 30 mm and 12.7 mm ones that are used to protect the ship at close range, reported The Week.
INS Himgiri: Modern Features
This new warship is not just powerful but also very smart. It shows big improvements in design, stealth, firepower, and safety. The Defence Ministry proudly said that around 75% of the ship’s parts and systems are made in India. That means most of this ship is built by Indian companies and workers, showing the country’s growing strength in defence manufacturing. This helps India become more self-reliant and less dependent on foreign suppliers.

The ship was designed by the Warship Design Bureau, which is part of the Indian Navy. The building process was carefully managed by the Warship Overseeing Team based in Kolkata. The ministry also shared that the Project 17A ships show how far India has come in building its own warships.
The INS Himgiri runs on a special engine system called CODOG, which stands for Combined Diesel or Gas. That means it can switch between a diesel engine and a gas turbine, depending on what it needs.
