Navy Exercise: The Indian Navy warship INS Mumbai is participating in a maritime exercise involving nine nations near some of the busiest shipping routes in the world, including the Malacca, Sunda, and Lombok Straits. These straits are vital for global trade but face challenges such as accidents, illegal immigration, drug trafficking, and natural risks like earthquakes and tsunamis.

According to the Tribune India, the exercise, called La Perouse, started on January 16 and will continue until January 24. Navies from countries like the US, UK, Canada, France, Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore are also taking part. The goal is to strengthen cooperation among the participating nations by focusing on maritime surveillance, interdiction operations, air operations, and sharing information.
INS Mumbai’s role in the exercise includes participating in advanced activities such as anti-air warfare, air defense, cross-deck landings, and tactical maneuvers. This event provides an opportunity for the navies to build better communication, coordination, and interoperability. A system called IORIS will also be used for communication during maritime crises, helping nations synchronize their efforts and respond more effectively.
