Russia’s Strike on Kyiv: A missile strike in Kyiv early Saturday, launched by Russia, killed four people and injured three others, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky. The attack was described by Russia’s defense ministry as retaliation for Ukraine’s earlier use of US-made ATACMS tactical missiles in strikes on the Belgorod region. Ukraine has not confirmed the use of these weapons.
The missile hit several key locations in Kyiv, including the entrance to a subway station, a water pipeline, and a McDonald’s restaurant, located just a few kilometers from the presidential palace. Russia claimed its strike targeted a rocket manufacturer and stated that all objectives were achieved.

This incident follows a series of deadly attacks earlier in the week, including strikes on Kryvyi Rih, Zelensky’s hometown, and bombardments in western Ukraine. These attacks caused nationwide power outages and prompted Poland to deploy military jets. According to SCMP, Ukrainian air defense reported intercepting two ballistic missiles and 24 out of 39 drones overnight. However, several strikes still caused significant damage, including injuries to at least 10 people in Zaporizhzhia, according to Governor Ivan Fedorov.

Ukraine’s military claimed to have targeted an oil facility used by Russia’s military in the Kaluga region. Additionally, a fire broke out at an industrial site in Tula, reportedly caused by falling drone fragments, with five UAVs attacking the region. Russian authorities reported shooting down 83 drones within 24 hours as both sides increasingly rely on unmanned vehicles for combat.
This escalation comes just days before Donald Trump’s inauguration as US president. Trump has promised a swift end to the war, but how he plans to achieve peace between Russia and Ukraine remains unclear.
