US Military China-Made Submarines: Pakistan is preparing to add its first submarine made by China to its navy. This step shows the strong defense relationship between Pakistan and China, which both countries consider very important. Their partnership focuses on helping each other in areas like security and fighting terrorism.

Pakistan is recognized as a Major Non-NATO Ally (MNNA) by the United States. This title gives Pakistan certain military and economic benefits but does not mean the U.S. has to defend Pakistan in case of conflict.

Newsweek has contacted the U.S. State Department, the Chinese Defense Ministry, and the Pakistan’s navy through email for comments.

The Submarine Deal with China

Pakistan and China signed an agreement for eight Hangor-class submarines. Four are being built in China, and the other four will be made in Pakistan. The first submarine was launched in April 2023. These submarines, based on China’s Type 039B model, are expected to be delivered between 2022 and 2028.

These submarines have advanced technology for better stealth, movement, and firepower. Admiral Naveed Ashraf, the Chief of Pakistan’s Navy, said the submarines would allow the navy to handle many different missions more effectively.

Other Naval Projects with China

Pakistan has also bought four Type 054A/P frigates from China. These ships add to the navy’s strength and ability to carry out operations. Admiral Ashraf said Pakistan is not competing in an arms race with India but is making sure its navy can complete its tasks.

India, Pakistan’s neighbor and rival, is also increasing its naval power. Recently, India launched a submarine and two warships to strengthen its presence in the Indian Ocean. At the same time, China is expanding its navy far beyond its own region.

The new submarines are expected to improve Pakistan’s ability to defend its waters and limit enemy movements in its area. The timeline for the first submarine entering service is not clear, but this project shows how close Pakistan and China have become in defense cooperation.
