Sambhav Smartphones: The Indian Army has taken a significant step towards secure communication with the introduction of ‘Sambhav’ smartphones, specifically designed to enhance safety during high-level talks and information exchange. These phones were recently used during discussions with China in October, as confirmed by Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi at his annual press conference.
Sambhav, which stands for Secure Army Mobile Bharat Version, is an indigenously manufactured smartphone equipped with cutting-edge 5G technology. It provides end-to-end encryption, ensuring a highly secure mobile ecosystem.

General Dwivedi explained that the phones were introduced to prevent data leaks and improve the Army’s overall communication efficiency. “Sambhav smartphones were used to ensure an end-to-end secure mobile ecosystem,” he noted.
According to India TV, approximately 30,000 of these phones have already been distributed among police and Army officers. One of their standout features is the inclusion of M-Sigma, a secure messaging application developed as an alternative to WhatsApp.
This app allows users to share sensitive documents, photos, and videos without risking data breaches. The devices also include built-in key authority records, which eliminate the need for manual number storage, adding an extra layer of convenience and security.

The project, which began last year, reflects the Army’s commitment to using localized technology to safeguard critical information. The smartphones are compatible with Airtel and Jio networks and are designed to operate within a complex, encrypted communication network. Previously, officers relied on commercial apps that often-lacked proper security measures, leading to concerns over data leaks. With Sambhav, these risks are significantly reduced.
