Army Chief General Manoj Pande said on Monday that technology has become the new battlefield for military competition between nations. However, he also told the army to always be ready for “black swan” events and “expect the unexpected.”

In a speech at the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington, General Pande talked about how technology is spreading and being used as a weapon in many areas, such as information and supply lines.

The Army Chief General Manoj Pande stressed how important it was for all three services to work together across functions to effectively assess threats, set goals, figure out capabilities, make policies, get ready, and respond properly within the national security framework.

According to people close to Army headquarters here, he also examined how conflict is spreading into new areas including cyberspace, space, the electromagnetic spectrum, and information technology.

General Pande stated that the battlefield has become more deadly, contested, and complex due to the quick technological improvement in kinetic weapons.

The Chief of Army Staff advised officers to “expect the unexpected” and to always be ready for “black swan” events. (An unplanned, major event with big effects is called a “black swan.”)
