HAL Confirms TEJAS MK-2 Powered by GE F414 and Rejects French Engine

HAL confirmed the TEJAS MK-2 will use the GE F414 engine, rejecting French alternatives. Chairman DK Sunil said redesigns would cause delays.

TEJAS MK-2 by GE F414: Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has spoken clearly that the TEJAS MK-2 fighter jet is being built fully around the GE F414 engine. This comes after people started saying that French engines might be considered. HAL made sure to say that is not true at all.

HAL Chairman DK Sunil explained that every big part of the TEJAS MK-2 has been designed keeping the F414 in mind. DK Sunil said the airframe, the way the weight is balanced, the cooling system, and even the thrust needs are all shaped around this engine. He also said if HAL tried to use another engine like the French one it would mean changing the design a lot and this would delay everything, from prototypes to induction.

According to IDRW, he added “exploring an alternative engine option would necessitate significant redesigns, potentially delaying both prototype rollouts and induction timelines.” Sunil also showed trust in the GE engine, saying it has always been reliable and can be a strong base for the TEJAS MK-2.

Some reports had said that maybe French propulsion systems could be looked at for the jet, but HAL’s boss rejected that. He said those claims have no base. Sunil repeated that the F414 already works well with Indian fighter programs. It gives stable performance, so HAL can stick to its plan and not worry about delays.

He said“the F414 engine’s longstanding integration with Indian fighter programs facilitates consistent performance, allowing HAL to adhere to its planned schedules for the aircraft’s development and entry into service.”

Supply and Trade Concerns

There were also questions about what will happen if trade tensions rise between India and the U,S or if tariffs get in the way. HAL said people don’t need to worry because Indo-U.S defence ties are still strong. They said the deals already signed will keep F414 engines coming for the TEJAS MK-2 and there will also be support for making parts locally in India. This lines up with the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat plan for self-reliance.
