When we look at the last 10 years, India’s security and defence system looks very different now compared to th past. The government started putting huge money in defence, opened space for new technologies, and pushed hard for things to be made inside India. Earlier India was known more as a big importer of weapons, but now the country is seen as a rising exporter in the world.
Defence Exports Rising
In the last decade, India’s defence exports grew thirty-four times. This is a huge jump and in the year 2024-25 the number touched 23,622 crore rupees. The government also gave more than 1,700 export permissions in the same year. Now Indian companies sell different defence products to more than 100 countries. These countries include strong nations like the United States and France, and also Armenia. What India sells is not small things only, but a wide range like bulletproof jackets, patrol boats, helicopters, radars and even high-tech items such as torpedoes.
When Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened development projects in Katra, Jammu and Kashmir on June 6 this year, he clearly said that in the past ten years India has turned into a big defence exporter. He also said the next goal is to see India’s name among the top defence exporters of the world.

Atmanirbharta
The last 10 years of defence policy always followed the thought of Atmanirbharta, which means self-reliance. The government changed the old Defence Procurement Procedure of 2016 and made the new Defence Acquisition Procedure in 2020. This new rule joined with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan that Prime Minister Modi started. The focus here is clear first choice iz always “Buy Indian – Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured.”
