HAL’s ₹1 Lakh Crore Defence Orders: The defense manufacturing sector of India has reached an important turning point which exists because Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) operates as its main driver. HAL has received confirmed orders for 180 Tejas Mk-1A fighter jets and 34 Dhruv helicopters and 156 Prachand attack helicopters which together with HAL’s existing orders show India’s determination to achieve defense self-sufficiency.
HAL’s ₹1 Lakh Crore Defence Orders
HAL possesses its largest order book in company history which includes orders that exceed ₹1 lakh crore in value. The bulk of this comes from indigenous platforms ordered by the Ministry of Defence India.
The orders represent a long-term strategy which aims to decrease import rates while developing a domestic aerospace industry through the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
“We have successfully completed the integration of the radar and DTU (Data Transfer Unit). We have also successfully completed the ASRAAM (Advanced Short Range Air-to-Air Missile) testing for air-to-air missiles and the ASTRA beyond-visual-range missile,” the report quoted HAL’s CMD as telling the committee.
“These tests have been successful for the Tejas Mark 1 Alpha (Mk-1A). Furthermore, we have opened the third line at Nashik for the Tejas to enhance capacity to twenty-four. Additionally, we have established a second line for the HTT-40 in Nashik for production, and we have already produced the first three aircraft,” the report, titled ‘Demands for Grants of the Ministry of Defence for the year 2026–27 on Defence Public Sector Undertakings, Directorate of Ordnance (Coordination and Services) – New DPSUs, Directorate General of Quality Assurance, Directorate General of Aeronautical Quality Assurance, and National Cadet Corps stated.
The three biggest pillars of this order book are:
- Tejas Mk-1A fighter jets (Indian Air Force)
- Dhruv helicopters (multi-role utility)
- Prachand attack helicopters (Army & Air Force)
Tejas Mk-1A
The order for 180 Tejas Mk-1A jets is a game-changer. The Tejas Mk-1A is an advanced version of the original Tejas aircraft that India developed through its Aeronautical Development Agency. The system includes three main components which are:
- Advanced AESA radar
- Enables electronic warfare operations
- Beyond Visual Range (BVR) missile operations
- Requires less time for its maintenance tasks.
The Indian Air Force will use this aircraft to succeed MiG-21 aircraft throughout their operational life because it enhances safety and combat effectiveness.
HAL Opens New HIP Facility at Nashik for Tejas Mk1A Brake Discs
Dhruv Helicopters
The 34 Dhruv helicopters may seem smaller in number but their importance is significant. The HAL Dhruv helicopter functions as a multi-role platform which supports multiple missions including:
- Troop transport
- Search and rescue
- Medical evacuation
- Disaster relief
The Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard currently operate these helicopters.
Prachand Attack Helicopters
India achieves its greatest military aviation advancement through the introduction of 156 Prachand helicopters. The HAL Prachand functions as a specialized aircraft that operates in high-altitude combat environments which only a few nations can achieve.
Key features:
- The system functions at altitudes exceeding 5000 meters
- Employs anti-tank guided missiles
- Possesses air-to-air combat abilities
- Uses stealth technology and crashworthy landing gear systems
Can HAL Deliver on Time?
HAL has told the panel, “We have delivered 72 Dhruv helicopters. For Dornier, in the current year, we have a large order for the mid-life upgrade. For the Prachand, we have delivered 15 in advance, and they are already in the field. Based on that, we received orders for 156 units from the Army and Air Force.”
“We have also received an order for 240 AL31FP engines. We are already delivering these engines. This year, we will be delivering them in batches of 30.”
The order book shows strong results but actual execution will determine successful outcomes.
HAL has already ramped up:
- The Tejas production facilities operational in Bengaluru and Nashik.
- Collaborates with private companies for supply chain development.
- Uses local suppliers to obtain all necessary components.
The Tejas project has experienced multiple delays which raise present concerns. The armed forces will determine delivery success based on time which requires trust maintenance.
