To suit the needs of the Indian Armed Forces, Bangalore-based GalaxEye Space is building a satellite that can carry various sensors for Earth observation.

As per Janes, Deb Jyoti Pal, senior vice-president of business development at GalaxEye, told Janes during the Indian DefSpace Symposium 2024, which took place in Delhi on April 18 and 20, that the company intends to launch the satellite into space for assessment in the first half of 2025.

According to Pal, this low Earth observation (LEO) satellite will be equipped with both a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and an electro-optic (EO) sensor, which will both collect data simultaneously to give a more comprehensive picture of vital areas of interest.

The SAR sensor is capable of gathering data in any weather conditions, including overcast or foggy ones, day or night. This is not possible for EO sensors to do. However, interpreting SAR data might be challenging. Here is where EO data can help a user, according to Pal.

Pal continued, “We will gather SAR and EO data and combine them to give defense forces the best of both types of data.”
