India successfully conducted three flight tests of the indigenously developed Very Short Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) missiles at the Pokhran firing ranges in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), these tests mark a major step forward in enhancing India’s aerial defence capabilities, particularly against short-range threats such as drones and aircraft.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the DRDO, Indian Army, and the private industry partners involved in the project. He highlighted the advanced 4th-generation VSHORADS, which is equipped with modern, miniaturized technologies designed to boost the armed forces’ ability to handle a wide range of airborne threats.
The VSHORADS system, which has been under development for several years, is intended to meet the Indian military’s growing demand for cutting-edge air defence systems. It will serve as a much-needed upgrade to the Russian Igla missiles currently used by the Indian armed forces, which have been in service for more than a decade. The new system will enable rapid response to evolving aerial challenges, providing the armed forces with enhanced operational capabilities.
In his statement, Rajnath Singh also discussed the broader importance of bolstering India’s defence sector, mentioning key government initiatives that focus on fostering self-reliance and reducing dependency on imports. The success of these missile tests underscores India’s growing capability in developing indigenous defence technologies.
In addition to the VSHORADS tests, Singh also spoke at the Indo-Pacific Regional Dialogue (IPRD) 2024, reinforcing India’s commitment to peaceful cooperation in the region and advocating for secure maritime routes. He emphasized that India’s engagement with international partners, particularly in joint maritime security exercises and information-sharing initiatives, will continue to play a vital role in maintaining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific.
The successful tests of the VSHORADS missile system represent a major advancement in India’s defence modernization efforts, while also reinforcing the country’s position as a key player in regional security initiatives.
